Unusual severe finger pain

I was in the middle of a song at band practice the other night, I pressed on a string with my index finger and felt a soft crunch, kinda. It's the best way I can describe it. But for the rest of the night, it was in horrible pain, but also numb. Like the outer layer of skin was numb and could barely feel anything, yet there was still a deep pain. Pressing on the string sent a sliver of cold pain through my fingertip, even lightly brushing the string when my hand was resting on the neck sent a jolt through it. I couldn't play as well for the rest of the night because it hurt to touch anything. Even now, two days later, it still has this weird soreness to it. It's happened once before, less severely though, on my ring finger.

The guitarists both have no clue what happened, so I guess it's not a common ailment. I need to sort it out quick though, because there is no way I'm gonna play half-assed because of pain at a gig for Capitol Records.

Any diagnosis? Remedy?

Surely you must know what advice is coming... stop playing, and see a doctor or medical specialist ASAP.

No one here is qualified to give you any other advice.

+1, please forgive me, but what use of the words "severe pain" do you consider not important enough in seeking qualified medical advice about?

Well, I figured I'd check with fellow bassists first to see if it's happened to anyone else, like maybe my playing style or something of the sort is causing problems.

Also, I hate doctors.

Uh, like you hateanyone else that has more knowledge than you? Whatever your experience is with doctors, get over it. Maybe it's your know-it-all bad attitude that people respond to instead of anything else.

I'll take a guess. It sounds like you pulled some muscles or possibly broke a finger.

Obviously, until you get your finger examined and possibly x-rayed, you won't know what's up. If you wait, you take the chance that the pain and or disfigurement maybe permanent, thus ending your musical career.

TB is the last place to ask for medical advice when you're in severe pain. Going to the ER is where you need to be.

Good luck.

Let us know what happens.

Well, it's definitely not that I hate anyone that knows more than me, and I'm pretty sure that I don't "know it all".

Doctors and hospitals just freak me out.

And as for the finger, the pain has subsided for now. Still a little bit of deep, cold pain but it's not too bad.

I'll be making an appointment as soon as I can to check it out. I had the idea last night that it might be some sort of nerve damage, because of the numbness and the pain from just light touches.
