unwanted noise on recording

Sign in to disble this ad
so i was recording a bass line today (through my pod's usb connection into logic) and i'm getting this string noise.

bounce for talkbass.mp3 - 0.46MB

there's the link to an mp3 of it, i think it's just my sloppy playing. except that even playing it slowly and as carefully as i could, i couldn't completely get rid of it.

do i just need to practice more? or change something about how i record? any thoughts?

Play along with a song you know & see whether or not the string noise is still a factor. 9 times out of 10 it isn't a factor anymore.

I think you need to raise your saddles a bit.

Are you fingering? If you're pulling up at an intersecting angle, then the resulting release will touch your frets or pickups. Try doing it as close to parallel as possible or using the very edge of your fingertips with this particular bass. Of course, you can just adjust the instrument itself and not have to worry about finesse.

well, i wouldn't have normally noticed this, it's for a hip hop beat based around some layered strings but the rapper wants a part with just bass for a few bars.

oh, i see what you're saying, when i play fast i do have kind of a downward tapping thing going on. that's probably not a good thing.

thanks guys, i knew i'd get an answer here.

one more question: is it odd that i don't hear this through my amp?

When you raise your saddles you have to re-check your intonation. It could also, equally, be the truss rod that needs adjustment. Though I'd be careful before I did a truss rod adjustment, there's where you can do the most damage when working on your bass.

Google bass setup and very carefully follow the instructions.
