using keyboard/synth to improve

Sign in to disble this ad
I've recently worked through some tunes with keyboard/synth bass lines and I have found they invaluably aided my musicality

Custard Pie by Zep
Sussidio by Phil Collins
Housequake by Prince

are a few I have worked with

ANybody have some more to suggest?

Really, any experience with another instrument is going to add to your overall abilities and bring something else to the other instruments you play. I'm not sure if there are particular songs that will help specifically with your bass playing though. It's more your overall experience with other instruments as opposed to specific songs that will help you improve.

I agree. Keyboard is a very handy tool for exploring notes, chords, combinations and so on, which sometime might not be so obvious or convenient to do with a bass.

I'm impressed that you included Housequake by Prince, as it not a well known song outside of us hard-core Prince fans. Another suggestion would be Alphabet Street by Prince (killer bass lines)

"Ya Mo B There"-James Ingram
(Michael Omartian on sythn bass?)

"I Feel For You"-Chaka Khan
(another Prince tune...Greg Philliganes or Hawk Wolinski on synth bass?)

The System with David Frank also had decent synth bass lines.

"The City" -Dismemberment Plan
"Flashlight" -Parliament
(two songs that prove to me that there is bass beyond bass guitar-- and that have inspired me to learn keyboard.)
