Using a ramp for double thumb?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everyone, this is a unique question, or at least I think so.

On my starter bass (an ESP B50), the neck was much shallower than the body, therefore it was much easier to do double thumbing technique. The reason why is because my thumb would hit against the body of the bass and I could go right back up. This is not the case with my Musicman Stingray, my current bass.

I was wondering if a ramp would help solve this problem. Also, would the ramp get in the way of popping? Because I don't do the double thumb technique that much. Just for practicing really (i'm learning classical thump at the moment). But I do use the standard Louis Johnson or Flea type slap and pop technique in my band, so I was wondering if the ramp is a hindrance for the kind of playing where you have to go almost under the string to pop it.

So yea, will a ramp ease double thumbing, but not get in the way of the "standard" slap and pop technique?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the ramp goes between your pickups, and double thumbing/slapping is done between the neck and the first pickup.

So, assuming I'm not mistaken, a ramp shouldn't affect your slap.

Try the double thumbing over the last couple of frets on your fingerboard. This will act as a "RAMP" , and you can still get under the string for popping past the end of the fingerboard.

to add to the above post, get it so that the tip of your thumb can hit the very end of your fretboard (avoiding all the frets)

that will give a nice clean sound, give you that platform to feel, and give your pooping freedom

Having a ramp between you're fretboard and neck pup will help more with popping. I tried taping a piece of acrylic that I shaped to fit, and it helped more with the double/triple plucking. It was awsome, but I didn't like how it looked on that bass, a ESP C304 (awsome bass, it's my #1 above my Alembic...sorta....) I might permanently install a nice one one day, I already have one between my neck and bridge pups.

I'll try the end of the fretboard deal.
