using thumb

hi guys,
im new to playing bass (6 months)
i started off using a pick, but thought i should try fingers as well.
this has led me to just use the side of my thumb to play with, almost using it as a pick.

i dont want to get into a bad habit, so is this really bad?
i hope i dont sound too noobie here, ive had a blast learning some songs and really enjoy my bass, so any advice will be most gratefully accepted.

Some bassists, not very commonly but now and then use their thumb, it usually gives a warmer thicker sound, there is really no right or wrong, just do what is comfortable and easy for you.

Well some bassist use their thumb more like a secondary resource (using their other fingers as well), so I think you should first learn how to play fingerstyle with your index and middle fingers, and from there you can use the thumb as well. I started off like that, but believe me, playing fingerstyle is much faster and much easier. After a while your thumb will hurt a lot...

+1 - Since you are just starting out, I would recommend learning fingerstyle too. And before the flaming picks start flying at me... I am not saying playing with a pick or thumb or a pickle is improper or something you should not do. But since you are just starting, it would be in your best interest to learn some really good technique habits now.

Also, find yourself a teacher - a BASS teacher to help you get your technique together.
