The finish is worn off of his bass. He must practice a lot.

Pretty cool. But I didn't take anything away from that "lesson" other than I need to practice more...

I applaud his dedication to perfecting his technique.
He is certainly good at complex slapping.
The only serious problem is finding an audience that would like to hear such busy slapping.
I personally prefer the old school style of slap.
I mean no disrespect. Its just not the most melodic form of musical expression.
However, it is fun for the person playing it. 8)

I have a friend who has worn similar holes in the finish on his Kubicki.

Video sounded alright starting off. Too bad a lot of these slap bass videos getting out there now turn into a guy having an epileptic fit on his bass towards the end. Sounded like complete noise in the last minute or so. Looked cool and fast though at least. I don't know, after watching videos of someone great like Marcus Miller or Les Claypool using slap bass techniques and someone like this guy, it's almost like night and day between the two groups. You watch Miller or Claypool and you are treated to a show that while technical, doesn't come off with an air of showing off or trying to flail as fast as humanly possible, music and melodic attempt be damned. They don't try to do too much all at once making it sound like a car accident or train wreck. I don't know really. Each time I see a video like this, it really turns me more and more off on slap bass in general. While I do quite enjoy the tone, I don't want to scare potential band mates away preemptively with this kind of stuff. To each their own I suppose Probably wont be liked much after that one.

Rock on!
-Chris

Agreed. A pretty bad 'lesson' from what I could see (but then I don't speak his language) - the only thing that video taught me was that the guy in it is much better than me. A good incentive to practice more, though. I would like to be able to play like him. There is no doubt he is a great player though. I enjoyed that. I kind of agree with Freelancer about some of the comments he made, though; mainly that there is a point where it just began to sound sort of random and incoherent, and it is right about there that I, personally, begin to lose interest. I did watch the whole thing, though, and liked it. It was cool.

The guy has developed some amazing technique...however, he lost the groove in several places spots and, like many of these flashy slappers, seems mainly interested in seeing how many notes he can crowd into a measure rather than doing anything particularly musical.

The more I see of this stuff, the more it re-affirms my decision not to go down that road.

As an exercise in bassturbation its pretty self justifying, I prefer this one of his - it seems closer to a musical statement, but still...

I like music.

That isn't music.

Though, I guess it was in the context of a "lesson"

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one that thinks that he's not playing "with" the drummer/loop . . . it really doesn't matter WHAT you're playing, if it's not "groovin'", what's the point?

For the most part, I typically appreciate this type of playing. Probably since it is so different than what I do. But in this case it didn't do anything for me. He seemed to try to do some of Wootens riffs, but not nearly as polished or rhythmic.

I like this one better, has a lot more melody.

It may have a melody but it's being pushed out of the way by all the other unnecessary wankery

that being said I don't know if I'll ever be able to play like him...
