Vic Wooten does not use a Scrunchie!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been trying to find that Vic Wooten caterpillar looking thing that mutes your strings while playing slap and solo lines. I assumed (as have a number of other TB'ers) that it was a hair "Scrunchie". I asked my wife to pick one up at the store, and she insisted that what I wanted was not a Scrunchie, Scuncci or any such thing.

She's so adamant that she wants me to make sure you guys know. Well that, and it took me a while to find the right thing, so I thought I'd share...

I found Conair "Ponytailers" at Walmart, and they seem to work just fine. Carefully stretch 1 or 2 over the tuners and onto the neck. When you are slapping/tapping/plucking like Garrison push it up over the first fret or so to mute unwanted sympathetic resonance. When you're done, push it back behind the nut and it doesn't affect the sound at all.

Enjoy!

Yes that is the thing Victor Wooten uses, not a normal scrunchie, but what's the difference?

it actually does make a difference, a guitarist friend of mine let me borrow one of his hair tie ones...and it was a different brand, and it wouldnt fit over the headstock...and i tried another one, and it fit over the headstock but was way to loose on the neck...so thank you, ive been looking for this

If you use a normal scrunchie (like I do), double it on the neck (twist it into an 8 shape and put both sides on the headstock) and it works fine.

These ponytailers win for being smaller and easier to work with, but a regular scrunchie will work fine and usually covers more of the string.

Scrunchies have lots of fabric and are only intended for 10 yo girls with braces:

Regular hair ties are thin and don't mute the strings effectively:

These Conair "Ponytailers" are fuzzy like a caterpillar and don't look like a frou-frou shirt sleeve.

Warning: Only black is appropriate for bass guitars. Use of pink, lavender, fuschia will result in girly, inferior, guitar-like tone.

Finally! I tried one of those regular hair ties a while ago, but it was way to loose on the neck.

Old Jazz guitar players had the best solution. I attached to the headstock of the guitar. It had a level on it you could flip and when in gaged a metal bar with rubber on it would rest on the string at the first fret. Herb Ellis had one on his guitar all the time.

They were used for same reason to quiet strings when doing chord melody playing.
