A little theory helps a lot. Though I think I approach it differently than you. After that the feel of the song, or really the feel the band brings to the song, sure influences what I play (just in the very megre level I play at). Throw in some of the ideas I get listenting to the greats and, well, if I can't get to where I want to be, I can at least see where I'm going.
