well tone is a mixture of everything. how well you know a song so you can play it smoothly, how well you can get your fingers in the correct place on the frets, how consistent you are with the correct plucking/fingering hand technique, how enduring you can be... it all comes down to consistency i believe, because a more distincive sound comes from being able to flow smoothly from one thing to the next whilst remaining consistent.
just get your popping and slapping to a point where it sounds near enough the same each time you use that technique.
