suckbird, your saying that person is crap as his thumb is under the neck. Well that must include marcus miller then surely if you go with your conclusions, I have a book with him on the front and his thumb is way around the bottom of the neck . So surely he is crap as well then?

he's a lefty. he might have learned on an upside down bass, like hendrix did with guitar, then when he bought his lefty, he flipped the strings over since that's what he was used to.

anyway, as far as the strap issue, just wear it where it's comfortable. stage presence doesn't come from the height of your bass alone, you know.

besides, comfort > image

I also recommend adjusting the strap so that the the bass is in pretty much the same position, whether sitting or standing. Thus, your technique doesn't have to change accordingly. Wearing the bass at this level does not prevent one from "rocking out," so long as his/her hair is less than ~16 inches long.

I personally wear my bass so that I am picking over my belt buckle. I feel that I look sloppy with it this low, but it is comfortable.

Saw a band on TV a couple nights ago - The Pixies. Not my kind of music, but I listened for awhile, to check out the bass player. Interesting, I remember she was fat, had a cigarette hanging out the corner of her mouth and she played roots on the E string mostly, but I can't remember the position of her bass.

That post made me laugh for some reason.

I'll switch the position of my bass for the style of music I want to play. If I want to slap and play some Wooten or whatever, I'll high ride it sorta like he does. (Not that high. ) If I want to play metal and go for some triplets or fast 16th/32nd notes, I'll wear it lower. Having it low helps me relax my right hand index, middle and ring fingers. I can also reach frets 1-5 a little easier when I play it low.

Just IME
