Wedding Ring?

Sign in to disble this ad
When I'm playing, I find my wedding ring makes more contact with the neck and fretboard than I'm comfortable with. (Might just be poor technique on my part.) I've been moving the ring to my right hand when playing.

Anybody else with this issue?

It does sound like a technique issue more than anything else. I play with my wedding ring on and it never touches the neck or fingerboard. Not even on my 6 string, and I wear one of those thick titanium wedding bands.

But, if it bothers you for one reason or another, as I'm sure it does for many others, just do what you have to do. Take it off, move it to another hand, ect... No big deal.

I don't wear mine when I play. But then again, I'm really just in it for the chicks.

Uh... That would depend on his Wife! There can be enough trouble 'deserting the home to go out to places of questionable repute and having fun all night', then add "and he always takes his ring off"??

He might best just let it clack on the fret edges...

Wedding Ring

When I was married , I wore my ring on a silver chain around my neck when I was playing - might be worth a try for you ...

If you have short fingers I can see it possibly being a issue on a wide 5 or 6 string bass when your finger are more parallel to the fretboard. You could try dropping your thumb a little to angle your fingers out some. Otherwise one of the suggests from the other, but I'd explain to the wife first why your moving our ring around for playing. Don't want her imagination running wild and come home to a bass neck bonfire.

The length of your finger and anything on it should not be touching the bass. Definitely a technique thing.

well, i've got the same issue with the ring and i take it off when i play.

i don't think it's a "technique thing" though. this explanation suggests that people who prefer to take off rings while playing have some technical defect that others lack, which is not necessarily the case.

my ring doesn't really click against the frets or anything, it's just uncomfortable to have it on when i play, it's distracting. i'm sure that my technique could use a lot of improvement, but that doesn't seem to be the issue with the ring for me.

wearing my ring while i play would be something like wearing a hat while i'm at the movies. my eye sight is bad, but that's not why i take off my hat, wearing a hat while i watch a movie is just annoying...

i also have no guilt about removing my ring. my wife has already lost two diamond engagement rings and two wedding rings (i quit replacing them several years ago, now i have money for more gear ) - i still have my original wedding ring. heck, i could lose this ring and three more and break even. i'll have to think about that for a while.

I just leave mine on.
Either technique has changed to avoid contact(18 years with a ring...this time around) or I'm not aware of it(doubtful).

Misplacing or loosing it would cause MUCH more grief than a few minor dings on one side of the neck.

Off topic alert!
Besides....I punch, slap, and spank my basses anyway.
Only a good bass transmits a punch directly to the strings IMO...

I wear mine all the time and I haven't noticed it being a problem, but I also play on a very thin-necked 4-string. And I thought my technique was pretty crappy.

How high/low do you wear your bass? I can see that if the bass is lower, you might have more of your finger wrapped around the neck. I wear my bass fairly high and my fingers never come close to hitting with rings on.

I'm getting married in October. I really like the tungsten carbide rings but think that a lighter titanium ring would be better for the sake of bass playing. Decisions...

I wear mine...never bothers me, and my fingers are quite short

I actually use it as a percussive thing when I'm playing an acoustic guitar...

If I take mine off for longer than a minute, an alarm goes off on my wife's cellphone.

I'm so old that there's no point in wearing my basses low to look cool. <g> I generally try to pluck/pick with my right hand just about belt level. And no, I don't wear my pants up to my armpits. <vbg>

My fingers are medium length. I'll try to pay more attention and try altering my technique to see if I can live with it.

take the ring off and wear it on a chain round your neck...

I've seen one too many injuries where a ring got caught on something and the guys finger was de-fleshed... the ring doesn't give and just pulls the flesh off the bone... nasty

google for some images if you can stomache them...

search on ring degloving injury

warning... very nasty images... NOT SUITABLE FOR THOSE OF A NERVOUS DISPOSITION OR THOSE EATING MEALS etc...

even the thumbnails on google are bad...

LOL! You play at church?

I take mine off to avoid contact with the "G" string.

Manicbassman, what in the @#$% are you doing with your bass that you are worried about that type of injury?
