I think you mean not all that really true when in fact it is. I have been in your exact shoes before boss. I bought my first six string and looked for books on playing it seeing as I had learned by tab and had an extremely loose grasp of musical theory at that time.
After going into the music store and not finding any books on the 6 string bass specifically I figured I should go home and learn the 4 string bass. I went home and did that. I now have a much more comfortble grasp of the instrument. I can play any number of stringed bass regardless of tuning because I can understand how it all works together, I don't just know a few patterns based off tab.
You might not like my advice but it is the truth. Educators are phasing out tab for this exact reason, it doesn't teach music and can leave a student to hit a brick wall.
