I am assuming you are talking about right hand? Cliff Burton injured his pinky and COULDN'T move it at all.

It does not look stupid, I actually think it looks better than having it curled up.

Personally, I let my pinky do whatever it wants to. To try to move it somewhere it doesn't naturally go could be harmful, or uncomfortable.

Same here - mine does whatever it feels like!

If I'm going to concentrate on something when playing, it will be something that has a positive effect on the accuracy or tone of what I'm playing.. Remembering to curl my pinky in as well would be too much for my brain to handle and probably draw mistakes :S

If you're worried about how it looks, why not put something on it? Coloured band aids are a bit too Michael Jackson for most, but I know Nike do a range of different 'finger sleeves' in different colours for basketball players.. maybe one of those in the same colour of your bass would look cool?

Mine sticks straight out like I am holding a tea cup in the presence of the Queen.

Larry Moe and Curly would approve.

When I'm picking, I grip it with my thumb and index finger, and the other fingers just fan outwards..

I actually use my pinky for my 3 finger technique.

Index-Middle-Index-Pinky-Index-Middle-Index-Pinky-etc

Feels *much* more natural to me than using my ring finger.

lol, I really had to downsize that pic of Cliff.. looks terrible.

My pinky just dangles.. It doesn't stick out, or curl up, It moves with all my other fingers, but doesn' touch a string, my ring finger does the same (I only play 2 fingers.)

How you play makes it how YOU play, do not try to change that.

I'm right handed and I tend to play with my right pinky extended as well. I've been doing it so long it's pretty much habit...if anyone thinks it looks stupid they can close their eyes and feel the groove instead

depending on what i'm playing i either incorperate it into my picking or just let it do it's own crazy little pinkey groove while i'm jamming away

I have more important things to worry about than where my pinky goes. Like "is my strap low enough?" or "is this black really black enough?"

Mike, you are right, when you have a Ric, you don.t really feel self consious about much haha. I don't care how I look when I play, I have a Ric, and they can stare at the and not pick on my technique, altho, if I must say so myself, I have a good technique.

yeah i know im not that dumb, but there are a lot of people who play bass who dont use their left pinky, and many who do tend to let it flail off each time theyre not using it to play a note.
