what do you guys think about multiple tutors?

In the last 2 weeks i've seen 5 tutors while choosing my first bass instructor. Each one had a unique style of play, and each one told me not to do something that another one told me to do. It's not because some of their teaching methods are inadequate. For example: one of them insisted i learn to use a pick, while another told me that my thumb is already a pick in itself. I think that if i choose only 1 tutor im limiting myself. I will never be able to progress passed what he knows. my decision is to have multiple teachers as well as delve into books dvd's and online instructions to learn as much as possible. What are your opinions about this approach?

I forget the book, but somewhere I read that you can't serve two masters.

Choose the instructor that best suits your style of learning and your style of bass playing. You will get the most out of them than any other instructor.

Haha and just a side note, although you can play bass with a pick, I always say picks are for pussies, since a bass player that plays with a pick was most likely a guitar player that had to switch for the sake of the band.

I have 2 people that I learn from. But they teach seperate things. My thursday teacher is groove/time/soloing and my Monday teacher is theory/jam/song transcription. So I learn alot from both of them.

over the long term, might not be a bad thing to learn different things from different people. Dont know about having more than one instructor at the same time....might be too confusing

Valid point, but i disagree. I never touched a guitar in my life, but started bass with a pic. The reason? Justin Chancellor. It's a question of punch and brightness. getting back on topic now...

The only problem i see so far with having more than 1 tutor is conflicting opinions. It's tough to absorb all their positive information when they're telling you to do opposite things. i think the key is to understand what they're telling you, but make your own educated decision of what to do with the knowledge you attain.

Isn't that from "THE" book? About how you don't come to Heaven if you're fond of money?
