i don't understand the use of chops in your example. normally in music, it means to master your instrument. a classic use would be if someone were looking for a bassist, they would say "must have jazz chops".

definitely NOT a style of slap, but a very generic term.

wikipedia says:
QUOTE
-Chops, the basic set of musical skills a musician possesses, particularly in jazz
-Embouchure, in music, a synonym for chops; The embouchure is the use of facial muscles and the shaping of the lips to the mouthpiece of a wind or brass instrument.
The proper embouchure allows the instrumentalist to play the instrument at its full range with a full, clear tone and without strain or damage to one's muscles

Ch0pZ iz sKillZ.

Chops are like how well you can play, how fast you can play, how many different things you can do, etc. It's sort of a catch-all for those things, like, "Man, I got to get my tapping chops back together for this audition with Metallica."

In this instance, it refers to overplaying. They don't want anyone who's going to overplay.

This, except I will add solo skills or the ability to do flashy stuff in order to get noticed above everything else going on.

Apparently, there are a lot of us who like to show off and get noticed, especially as bassists since we don't many opportunities. It's kind of like having a Ferrari and using it to go to the grocery store. You really can't open it up to see what she can do that way, at least not in my town.

I'd say it means musical endurance, how long you can keep your technique and musical ideas relaxed and confident sounding through multiple songs. People like Rocco Prestia demonstrate this well, playing multiple 16th note funk tunes in one night while showing no fatique.

I always thought 'chops' means outstanding skills in the field of wankery.
