So i was looking around on vid-google the other day and came across this video http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...4053614&q=bass
I am not sure what to make of it, but the strumming technique sure looks impressive, as does the right hand finger speed.. overall i think its tasteless though. At times it doesnt quite seem like hes playing what the music sounds like, and im not sure why that is. Also, is he tremelo picking 3 strings at once? well not really picking but three finger plucking, looks pretty tough at that speed.. tell me what you guys think.

I've seen this posted before, most people condemned it as crap. I'm compelled to agree.

Also cant help but point out that hes wearing his own band's shirt (assuming the logo at the start is his band's.)

I think that the video is not in sync with the audio at some points.

btw, why did he reach his left hand over the neck at 42 seconds into the video?

Ah, but don't forget: beating the crap out of his bass WHILE making goofy faces.

That dude is pretty good if that's actually him making those sounds. Looks like a lot of guitar style transferred onto a bass. But, he is making a fool of himself with all that 'flare'. I mean, come on! The making faces and the throwing of arms in the air is just silly.

whatever. you guys are silly. so the kid's name isn't michael manring.

he's using flamenco guitar techniques which, admittedly, sound WAY better on guitar, but still. kinda cool.

and you HAVE to make those faces when you bend notes. just try to bend a note a whole step and NOT make a face. NOT easy. i've tried many times.

michael manring is boring. like steve vai and phish and michael bolton mixed together.

i can't deny he's amazing. but i'd rather watch pretty much anyone else play bass. i was way more into the kid playing flamenco bass.

THAT'S impressive.

didn't have the raw "gypsy" style strumming the hardcore kid had, but way more refined, technically better. i'd rather watch him than michael bolton... er, manring... anyday.

that cat's got STYLE.

i still like it better on guitar, though. all those little inflections and flourishes and runs and articulations are better heard on the guitar.

I'm the "kid" on this video. This song is more about adapting flamenco techniques on bass than creating the ultimate solo bass song. The video is effectively not sync with the audio (I had to compress the original file and I had this result).

In the song, I actually strum over all the four strings playing root-fifth-octave-third kind of pattern. As for the funny faces, well they are for entertainement purposes only. All I can say is that I have a lot more reaction from the crowd when I do them live than when I play "normally". This is part of show buisness guys

You are free to love it or hate (and everything in beetween), but as long as there are people who seems to appreciate what I do, well I'll continue.

BTW, my bass is an Alembic

Why?

Utter muppetry IMHO.

hey mang!! keep it up!

i'm with you!

by the way, i like the right hand gypsy technique you've got going... it's like strum-mute-thwack, or something... i've seen gypsy guys do it. it's pretty rockin. i like the way it sounds better on an acoustic guitar, but to each his own. it's the first time i've seen it done on an electric bass. keep it fresh!
