I'm curious to know what kind of chairs/seats/couches you all use when you practice. I used to use a wooden kitchen chair and I developed a lower back issue that has finally cleared up. Now I sit on my leather couch, but I don't feel 100% comfortable doing so. Are there specific chairs made for practicing stringed instruments? Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks. |

I use a regular office chair - sometimes I stand |

We've got a few Pro-line stools laying around they aren't that expensive and have lasted a long time.

The small body and short scale make that comfortable for that. I coudn't play my longer scale basses sitting down.

| | | | Fender 24" Bar Stool.
From what I've read, always wearing a strap adjusted so that your bass is in the same position as when standing.

The benefit for me is that it's so stable like this, that all the pressure of fretting, bends, slap stuff, 4 finger, whatever, is transferred without the reflect movement of the bass, everything is transferred from the tendons to the fretboard, it makes quite a difference, I had to get right angle jacks to do this, but for stability and connection, it works, everything is transferred in a static position.

| | | | Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think standing is the best way to play to have more versatility and good posture. |

I was thinking about getting a stool. |

| | | | If, when you sit and practice, your bass's positioning changes, your technique changes. If the angle of your hands change relative to the bass, when you go to gig (assuming you gig standing up) you will be playing differently than you did when you were practicing.
So, +1, to the guys who practice standing becasue they gig standing.
I cant understand how it can be done otherwise. |

But on the very rare occasion that I sit, I use use a cheap adjustable armless computer chairs from one of those big-box stores (and I still wear it strapped). EDIT: I should add that when I am seated, my left knee is in front and my right knee point down w/ my right foot beneath me so the bass hangs like it would if standing
