A bass line is catchy, simple and complements every other sound involved.

It's the lowest pitches in a piece, generally has some sort of melody albeit it ca be very simple but it could also be a pedal point... in fact if you played a G# (13th fret G string) while a guitar player played an Emaj chord... he would be playing the bassline.

What makes a bassline a bassline? It's the part the defines the harmony and connects the rhythm with the rest of the music. Makes no difference how the sound is produced, but does it fill that function?

I love bass lines like Prince's on "When Doves Cry", like Chet Atkins, or Joe Pass, or Tuck Andress all by themselves, like Jimmy Smith's, Steve Winwood's or Chester Thompson's B3 pedals, Stevie Wonder's or Oscar Peterson's left hand, Larry Graham's voice, Bach's compositions, or The Manhattan Transfer doing a cappella.

It can be as simple as what Bee Spears played on "Good Hearted Woman" what Jack Bruce played on "Badge". Or it can be as many notes as Chris Squire played on "Roundabout" or what Jaco did on "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines", or what Victor Wooten does on "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo". None of that matters. It's the line that fulfills the function on any particular performance of a song.

So it happens to be played on a bass (although it could be done in a low register on a keyboard instrument [maybe even a harp, or lower wind instrument]). And it can be either rhythmic, harmonic or melodic?

Good insights...

There is no universal definition of which I am aware (regardless of what Wikipedia may say... ). But I like to think of the bassline as the lowest (pun not intended) common denominator between rhythm, harmony...and melody (yes melody!). Think of it as the three-dimensional corner of the interior of a house - the point at which two adjoining walls meet the floor. That's the bassline...

It's not necessarily just the root - although it usually contains many root notes. And has been pointed out, it isn't even necessarily always played by the lowest-voiced instrument in the ensemble (be it tuba, bass guitar, Chapman Stick, pipe organ pedals, or what have you), although typically it is.

Lowest common denominator part. That's what it is to me.

A bassline is a corner.

Got it.
