So I guess what i'm trying to say is that speed isn't always that important its more in how it sounds and do you like what you are hearing?
Hysteria is easy. :-/

This thread has the potential to get really complicated. I've never heard of speed/tempo as an "average". Which average are you interested in? Mean, Median, Mode...

I'm not sure what the point of an average tempo would be...

A fast tempo doesn't have to mean fast playing. A slow tempo doesn't have to mean slow playing.

Half-notes at 160bpm isn't "fast".

64th notes at 60bpm could be considered "fast".

What's the tempo? What's the rhythm? What kind of notes gets one beat?

There's a lot to consider here...

Sorry if I complicated things.

Joe

Make sure you put spaces in bassist 4 life's name please. As you can see; without the spaces, it would be me.

Thanks,
Joe

Not a chance can anyone play that fast unless you are some sort of tapping wizard with a 10 string bass. There would be no accuracy at that tempo, plus if you got off or the drummer's arms fell off after 2 bars what would you do to recover. Sorry, would be impossible to be 100% at that tempo. Also think of this, playing one string is different than running scales or playing a line. Try running a major scale up and down using 16th notes at 120bpm. Not as easy as you'd think. Oh and one other thing, we are all aware that there are four 16th notes for every beat, right? I though so, I have faith in all of you.

That's a fun line, it took me awhile to learn too. Just use a metronome, make sure you're using alternate fingers, and start slow. Click your metronome up a notch everytime you nail it on beat and eventually you'll be playing at full tempo. The string chagne parts are the hardest so you'll probably have to drill them a bit.

During a jazz gig, it was time to play So What. The keyboard player says, "This one's all about the bass."

The drummer says, "All about the bass? That must be why it's called So What."

ALL 16th at 260 bpm sounds to me little much, don't blame me, but I wonder if Di Giorgio can stand this speed ! I think average speed depends on the genre of music you play. A metaller should at least reach 120, but mainly playing the same note. Is it more difficult to play the same note at 180 bpm (all 16th) or to perform a major scale on the biggest frets at 120 ? That's the question. I love speed, but speed is not everything. There many other issues in bass playing such as dynamics, funk rhythmic patterns, which are as important as speed...

Somehow, i doubt some people are really playing 16th over 200 bpm. In the latest Bass Player, Alex Webster talks about how he has problems doing 16th over 200 bpm.

If HE has trouble doing these, i am somewhat doubting some kid on this forum can do 16th at 260 bpm.
