what technique is going on here at 49-51 seconds in the video?

i can't figure this out!

sounds like two sets of triplets but i don't know the technique to use for it. anyone?

In this case, he's using double thumbing for getting those fast percussive notes: Slapping with the thumb using downtsroke and upstroke motions, like playing with a pick.

Other way to doing it is using the fretting hand to slap the fingerboard. In this case, you hit the string with your thumb, then slap the fingerboard with your fretting hand and then another thumb stroke. Mark King is one of the most notable exponents of this approach:

Well, actually, those are three clicks played with double thumb (a 16th-note triplet) followed by another one (an eighth note) played by popping the G string.
