What technique was hardest for you to learn?

For me it was artifical harmonics. I think that is what its called, when you fret a note with your left and use your right index to play the octave of that harmonic while your ringplays the string. That took me atleast a month of practice. I had such a hard time with it because my ring finger could not move individually. It always moved with my index and pinky. So what about you guys? Also if you can post why it was so hard to learn.

Thumb positions (above the octave) on the upright bass is tough for me. The strings' height down there makes it even tougher. But, I don't really play upright anymore these days, so...

When I was learning I had the hardest time with pull off's. Didn't have the finger strength back then. Now I can do a pull off with all 4 fingers I can't think of anything else I had that hard of a time with when I started.

Ascending runs that involve crossing strings in the upward (i.e. towards the higher strings) direction. Nothing else compared to the woodshedding I've had to put into doing that. Endless exercises with pentatonics, arpeggios etc. just to get to the point where I can play anything going up in reasonably good time.

This is awkward because of the movements required for finger-style. Unlike descending runs where you can hammerstroke, you have to actually "move the mechanism" (to use Todd Johnson's term) up to the next string in order to pluck it. I had to relearn how to do it when I switched to the floating thumb last year too.

For me this was and still is the most miserably difficult move to execute, so I practice it all the bloody time....

Slapping. I still can't slap a line without it sounding like wankery; mainly because I don't know what I'm supposed to learn other than the actual technique....I don't know WHAT basslines to slap that aren't easy like "thank you falettinme" or absolutely way too hard for my current level ala victor wooten and marcus miller.
When I see videos of people that just bust out these crazy slaplines riffs, I have NO idea what songs they listened to to develop it like that.
