when you are "popping" a string, should you alternate between the index and middle fingers?

I do use both fingers if I am popping two strings, either both at the same time or one right after the other. But I usually don't "pop" one string twice in a row with the same finger. I only do the doulbe finger pop want a flam, either w/ notes, or ghostnotes.

But, I'm a pretty basic popper, I do more slap when I'm slapping and less popping. I use my thumb on all strings, that sound fits more with the style I play when the ocasion to use slap comes up, which for me is seldom.
