When slapping, should the thumb bounce up from the string or..

or should it just touch it lightly and go through to rest at the string below?

According to Victor Wooten the thumb should hit the string and follow through to rest on the string below.

According to Louie Johnson you should hit the string and bounce off of it immediately.

So I guess the answer to your question in either case is yes. I tend to bounce mine off of the string, but I've had guys here at TB suggest I try the Victor method citing a fuller sound. This method seems a little harder for me to get used to.

Try both and see what works for you

The Victor Wooten thump is a little different from slapping (hence the term "thump" and not "slap" ).

When normal slapping,the thumb bounces off the string.
