Where is it bad to feel sore while practicing?

Sign in to disble this ad
I actually have two questions. I play fingers a good 90% of the time, using my index and middle. While I do this, I kind of 'tuck' my ring and pinky fingers in to get them out of the way. Is this bad?

Second, I know it's natural to feel sore when practicing for a while, but where is it normal, and where is it just a sign of bad technique? I feel pain on the right side of my right wrist; about where I tuck in my two fingers. Is this bad, and if so, is where I put my fingers the problem?

I dont know if its bad technique. I seen Dave LaRue play with his ring and pinky finger tucked in. If you feel pain, change your technique. Maybe its the angle of your right hand. Try playing with less of an angle. Check out

There really is no "right" technique. if it works for you that's great.

There's a difference between soreness and pain (which I'm sure you're aware of). If you just get sore after playing a while, that's normal from using the muscles so much. If you get actual pain (like shooting pains in the wrist) that's definitely not good. Pain is the body's way of telling us something is wrong. If you have pain you need to adjust your technique. If it doesn't go away after the adjustment, you may need to see a doctor.

I was told that "tucking" is a sign of novice player and that it looks unprofessional. Plus it seems that there is more strain in my wrist if I pluck this way. Just my 2c.

Tucking your fingers makes the muscle in your arm tense for no reason, you will end up feeling fatigue much quickly. If I read your post right you are already feeling some pain on the right side of your arm where the muscles that flex your ring and pinky finger are.

Just don't think about your two fingers, let them hang naturally and relax your hand when you play.

+1 I agree with this. Don't worry about it looking one way or another but I think that undue muscle tension and energy is being used on that side of your hand which might be the reason for the pain ... plus, you'll want at least one of those fingers free if you start experimenting with different techniques down the road.

No pain, no gain.

But there's the pain you get from bad technique and the pain you get from warming your muscles up properly and using the hell out of them.

Like the feeling you get after you've killed yourself in the gym for the first time in a while -- kinda painful but satisfying?

This is a good feeling, but the other one is bad!

I stick them out. Our Russian friend was told tucking them is unprofessional, sticking them out makes me look "dainty". Aint looking for a boyfriend when I play !

Seriuously , most players dont care a rats arse what you LOOK like, but biomechanics and economy of motion are KEY.

Let your fingers sitck out like you're sipping a " proper cup o' tea", andn see it it helps. I couldnt get any speed tucked in., Let 'em hang out man.
