What the following says is that it's all over the place.

I find I move my thumb all the time, depending on what kind of sound I'm trying to get or which technique the music dictates. On my 5-string it's best for me to rest it on the B to dampen it because I get too much crosstalk otherwise. On more intricate passages, it stays on the lowest string I'm not using at the time. Playing over a pickup near the neck, my thumb is either on the side of the neck or on the side of that pu. If it's the bridge pu, it's against the bridge pu. If it's between the two or over a middle pu(Precision config.) it's suspended in the air and part of the lower palm rests against the bass and even that part of the hand rises off the body all the time so that no part of my hand contacts the body. Of course, with picking and slapping, this is a non-issue. The ironic thing with my old Precis. is that it has a thumbrest which has never been used.

In answer to your second question about "should I get used to moving my thumb?," do whatever seems to get the job done best with reasonable comfort. For some folks it comes naturally, while some folks have to work at it.
