Where should my thumb be?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing bass for a few months now and so far i have been resting my thumb on the end of the neck and playing with my middle and index fingers. Should I only be using this tecnique for certain stuff, and if so, what kind of stuff? And does it produce a better sound if i play with my thumbresting on a pickup? Thanks in advance.

IMO its between the pickups(if you have a two pups) but the floating thumb technique is most useful

When I play fingerstyle, I anchor my thumb on a pickup or end of the neck depending on what kind of sound I want. Closer to the bridge is going to give you a brighter sound. Closer to the neck is going to give you a fatter sound.

as with everything, it really depends where you physically are playing. I never liked anchoring on the pickup, nor did i ever like the neck. try the e string! i keep it there when playing standard fingerstyle, and you just pick it up when you need a note on the low string. just keep it there with a tiny bit of pressure and you should be okay!
