Where to start?

I've been playing bass for 2 years now, and all I've been doing the whole time was finding tabs for songs I like and trying to find songs by ear (I've been getting better at this lately). But the problem is that I never really developped any techniques at all.

I never studied chords or scales or stuff like that. I know where are the notes on the fretboard if I take my time, but not that much.

So I decided to start learning everything the right way. I know the best solution would be to get a teacher, but I can't really afford one right now so it's not possible.

I know this forum contains all the information I need but I just need directions. What should I learn first? where to start? Should I start with knowing my fretboard better? or learn chords and scales or other stuff? Please direct me in the right path.

Thanks for your help.

Supergolom, you might want to try some kind of method book. There are a lot of different ways to go here. I'm guessing that you play primarily pop/rock or jazz. I think that the latest edition of Hal Leonards Bass Method, edited by Ed Friedland, is a good starting point.

The book comes in three progressive volumes and has CD's with which you can play along. The method uses mainly standard notation but does include some tab. It also touches on many different styles. Good luck.
