I think i play more like the second one But I never realy payed to much attention to how i put my fretting hand on the neck , i just let it place itself on the most natural comfortable place.

Like the bottom pic but with my thumb up a bit higher. Sometimes when I'm just playing around, I'll grab the fretboard from the top so its like my hand is upside down and i'll just do scales. Looks kind of impressive...if a moron was watching.

I use the second technique, but I have a hyperextended thumb joint (hitchhiker's thumb) and really large hands, so this is how mine looks:

I usually use something more like the bottom picture but Its a little different because my hand is bigger than yours. I'll also use my thumb for muting the E string if I'm playing something that doesn't allow for any other way of efficently doing so but normally doing that doesn't allow me to extend my 4th finger nearly as much.

I use my thumb as an anchor, perpendicular to the fretboard and i pivot on it when I shift as necessary. I used to think fretting with the thumb was bad technique, but after trying it out (and seeing Les do it, haha) it's no big deal. It can make a line a lot easier to pull off if you use your thumb.

It's still not as technically flawed as doing drum overdubs on handicap accessible railing fixtures:
