I occasionally use my thumb. I like the note consistency I can get with it, and it's a really warm tone.
I can play much faster with my fingers though, it just feels more "right."

i use most all my fingers except the pinky. it depends on what i'm playing, notes, chords, speed, tone i want. thumb comes in handy sometimes. but i can't see using it all of the time without getting very tired.

It's probably a technique for the player who wants a non-aggressive tone.

I used to think it was the lamest, old fashioned approach but now I find it's a technique that is unique unto itself. Of course, more meat= more bass, but beyond that I find that rotating movement lends a whole different rythmn to things. I'm not a country player, I'm using this in a funky- R+B style. It is impossible to overplay when you do it! Unlike using a pick(which I also do) you can switch back and forth from fingers and thumb for interesting combinations of attack in the same line. Use all the tools you've got sez me!
