I started with a pick in the 1970s because I also played guitar and it seemed to be an easier transition. I have since converted to finger style and rarely use a pick. I like the warmer tone I get with my fingers and find that I can play faster and more accurately than I can with a pick.

Chris Squire. I liked the sound he got so that was my main reason.
Play mostly pizzicato now but still use a pick for certain tunes.

I love the pick for the attack and speed. You can get so many sounds from one. I play a lot of cords and fast runs, bowing and scraping across the strings, pick drags etc. I hold the pick with very little showing and there is string contact with my thumb at times. When striking the string I hold the pick at a angle and dig into the string, you can see evidence of this at the tips of my worn picks. Here is how it sounds https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v...type=2&theater

After 10 years of playing bass primarily finger style with some slap and pop here and there, I've only started to try out pick style at the turn of this year. After playing 4 sets for 2 bands on new years eve, my fingers where spent. Really sore and really raw for days after it, I thought "I need a way to conserve my fingers health." So I thought a pick would be the logical answer. I was surprised at how tough I've been finding it, I always regarded it as a lesser way of playing the bass but realise now, it isn't.... and the pick does have its advantages in certain situations as I like the sharp attack and bright tone. I'm finding the spacing on my 5 string easier to adapt to than 4 string too.
