Why do you need a ramp?

it seems quite popular nowadays. But I'm not too sure what kind of problem a ramp is supposed to fix that proper technique won't? thanks

Most people prefer to pluck over the pickups because you get less dig. A ramp allows you to get the same feel under your fingers over a wider area. I've noticed on a lot of basses also that between the bridge and neck pickup is where the nicest tone is (imo), but it's not as comfortable to play there as it is over the pickups.

It makes life easier for people who play with four fingers. Otherwise you end up with an inconsistent feel for each finger, since some will be plucking over the pickup limiting the amount they dig in, and some won't increasing the amount of dig. It's not a must have, I play four fingers without one, but I'd like one because it would be one less thing to worry about. Especially when playing at high volume, when just a little bit of dig will cause the note to sound harsh.
