Why i hate Larry Graham

Ha i knew that title might draw some of my fellow funksters.

Dont worry its all in good fun.

But heres what i would like to know. Recently while search the internet for for advanced slap technique videos ifound one of great interest. It is a video of larry graham showing of his various techniques and line building ideas (shot in japan with japanese subtitles if anyone has seen it). And for a long time it been searching the some of the really fast slap sound the that i never felt i could do with my thumb alone but adding a muted pop neversounded right. ANd then i found it is up and down slapping. in this video he demonstrates how to do it and it looks so easy, like hes plucking with his thumb down on one string up on the string above but sounds just like a slap and not a thumb pluck, and he does it fast to.

So i thought wow ill try and learn this. But come to find out its nearly impossible for me lol. Unlike larry and his moon bass, i own a Warwick FNA jazzman 5 and the sting seperation seems to small to perform this technique (thumb just slides off on up slap) . Is there any one out there who has a warwick (of any kind because i find that almost all warwicks have small string seperations). Any help on this would be much appreciated

Just keep practising...you´ll get it...

just try to hit the string with a corner of your thumb...But try to keep the wrist slap motion in it...

When you´ll master it you´ll be able to do it on 6 string acoustic guitar, trust me...

good luck

Stingray,
At first I couldn't understand your signature:
"If life throws you a guitar duck. If life throws you a bass pick it up and play the finish off it"
I know what a bass pick is, but I kept tryin' to visualize what a guitar duck looks like. Then, I realized......ahhhhhhh, commas. lol As in: "If life throws you a guitar, duck. If life throws you a bass, pick it up and play the finish off it" Yeah, I hate Vic Wooten, too; but in a nice way!

I double-thump on my Warwick Streamer 5 string. The spacing doesn't become an issue for me unless i am adding plucks as well. I'm not sure if I'm doing the Larry Graham style or not though. I'm also not clear on your thumb sliding off on the up thump.

Larry was playing his butt off in that video with ease. I love larry but the video didn't teach me either. I have huge hands, and I had thought about getting a Warwick Streamer with the wide spacing option to make slapping easier. Have you considered that???

Care to link to the video?

Also I have a slightly older Ibanez Soundgear and it has tighter string spacing than the warwick -- by about two hairs and I still do up-and-down slapping. Keep practicing and good luck!
