Wondering how to progress from this point

Most of my musical life I was a drummer. I picked up the bass while on hiatus from gigging. I am completely self taught and play well enough to be in a working band. Now that I have reached this point, all my time devoted to music is used for learning songs (and band business, etc.) I want to grow but it seems as if I will be at this level for a while.

I found myself in that same situation with rhythm guitar, I'm doing a good job with what I'm supposed to do - which is to augment the solo vocalist or solo instruments and don't step on any one's toes. My rhythm guitar although adequate, has not improved greatly in the past five years. To go beyond what I am doing would take a new band, as all the slots are taken in the present band. Not sure I want to expel that much effort what with everything else I have going on. Plus I like playing with that band. I've accepted that and......

My "fancy stuff" scales, modes, etc. is done at home for my own enjoyment. Theory occupied my time for several years then other instruments, keyboard, clarinet filled that need. Just recently I was able to connect with another band where I play bass to old classic Country songs. That is filling a need and I'm happy. Sounds like you also have a need - to get better - have to weight what it will take to get there - along with all you have going on ...... could a new instrument fill that itch? Still play with the old band and your friends, but, look for something new to challenge you.

time spent with your instrument is time spent "getting better."

I have the same story as you - drummer turned bassist.

If you don't know how to read, now is a good time to learn. Also try mixing up the style of songs you learn, even if you don't like the music. Learning motown quickly made me TONS better for example.

Also pick apart every song you learn and try to understand how it's built - that will help A LOT with understanding how to improv and make up new stuff because you'll start recognizing patterns and where/when to use them.

Last, I like to work with a drum machine - I set up a given pattern and try to make myself figure out at least a half dozen different bass lines for it. Then I move on to the next pattern and repeat. This helps in band situations a lot where the drummer starts playing something and you already know at least 6 different ways you can play against it.

Good luck. You'll break through this plateau if you just keep playing.
