Working out fast lines by ear

I have a reasonable ear, which means given some time I can work out most Basslines/Melodies. However, when trying to work out Jaco licks and suchlike I find the speed gets to much for me, It's just too fast for me to work out properly.

So any tips on how to develop hear and internalise fast passages would be appreciated.

In addition, is using software to slow down tracks unmusical? Would it better to be able to work them out at their original speed?

Not at all, slowing things down to get a handle on things is something that has been going on since recorded music was invented!!. If it works for you then do it - just about every Bass player/Guitard before you has done the same.

I used to play 33rpm albums at 16rpm on my parents' record player - instant half speed!!.
