Wrist Cramps?

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't know if it is a huge problem, but I noticed that I started getting "wrist cramps" when I play. I have been fine for the six months I have been playing bass, but ever since I changed the strings on my bass (3-4 days ago) I have been getting pain in my right wrist. The only difference in the new strings is that I went from roundwounds to flatwounds. I have began to keep my wrist straighter when I play, but I still get the slight pain when I play for about 15-20 minutes. I have always played either close to the neck or in between the two pickups. I really love playing and don't want to stop, so if there is anything I can do, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Tendinitis?

Take some ibuprofen and see if that relieves the pain. Could be inflammation of tendons. Probably not related to the string change as the tension is about the same, right?

The tension and gauges is exactly the same. The only problem is that I'm only 15, so I'm limited on the medications I can take.

IME Technique!

Watch your hands in a mirror when you practice and check the bass height/strap length.

If you slinging real low; that can cause problems due to placing your wrist in a very unnatural position.

What works for many including myself; adjust your strap so your bass is the same whether sitting or standing...

Also, keep your thumb below halfway on the back of the neck, (towards your highest string). This allows you to play with your fretting hand in a natural position and lets you "pinch" the string at the fret with your fingertips, not the pads.

Take your time and keep watching your fingerboard hand. After that, do the same with your plucking hand/fingers.

In the meanwhile, definitely take your favortie over the counter pain reliever and try icing too...
