wrist injury?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing bass for over two years now, usually about 3 times a week. Just recently though I finally got the band thing going and have been playing much more, like almost every day for 4 hours each day. I play street punk style music and use a pick. Since I have been playing more the outside of my arm about two inches below my right wrist has gotten really irritated and even bled a bit because usually when I play it rubs along the top of my bass. Does this happen to anyone else? I am not sure if it is problem with my playing style, I can play with my arm forward more so it doesn't touch but it makes me a bit sloppier and then my shoulder starts to hurt. Also I think it might be my bass, I have a schecter c-4 and it isn't tapered at all where my right forearm comes in contact with the bass. I have played on a fender jazz bass which is tapered there and so my arm isn't resting on a corner so it doesn't hurt at all.

So what do you guys think? Should I get a different fender style bass or just try and not rest my arm on it?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you like the bass and you want to keep it, sand off and taper the top of the body where you make contact so its comfortable. If not sell it for one that is. I have sanded basses to suit me, its not problem, here's one that on-going with more to come off. The trick is gently and slowly, you can always take more off if need be, its harder to put it back on.

I know it's an old thread, but it's a common problem.
Learn to play without rubbing your arm against the bass.
The pain from the slight injury you have will serve as a reminder to hold your arm's weight with your shoulder instead of the bass... I know at first it feels awkward and hard to play but that's temporary until you build strength and you will be doing yourself a favor to unlearn the bad habit.
