wrist problem

I have been playing guitar for 10 years, drums for 5, and bass for about 1 year. I have been getting sharp pains from my wrist up into my fingers on my fret hand but this only happens when I play bass tho. Will this fade over time if I build strength because I havent been playing bass for a long time, or can this grow to a bigger problem like carpal tunnel? thanx

RoundaBout-

You should absolutely not try and 'push through' your sharp pain. Do you have any videos of yourself playing? If so sharing those here might produce help for your posture. Otherwise, one possibility would be to seek out a pro teacher who can critique your technique and hand positions.

FWIW:

Unless you're playing an extra long scale bass, with high tension strings, and high action or doing tons of chording there should be no problem unless you're just beginning.

Bass requires the most left hand strength so it's not surprising that's where an issue is showing up. You don't ever want to play through pain like your describing cause your bodies trying to tell you to knock it off.

Less the above, having played keyboards, guitar, drums, bass, and as an RN I'd say what you need is a health care professional (Physician, physical therapist, whatever) to rule out you don't have a physical issue.

Could be there's just something out of whack that can just be snapped back into place.

I'll add I suppose it's possible that your technique is off enough to cause such an issue but you should be able to clear that up with a little reading. Usually if you have a lot of wrist arch or you're trying to squeeze like crazy with your left thumb to get a clean tone then something is amiss.

How hard are you playing?

That causes TONS of problems

this has happened to me also. ive had a real sharp pain followed by a sort of snap of my wrist, then numbness of my fingers. it goes away but its pretty scary. it happens after long jams or shows.
