OK silly newbie question how exactly am I supposed to play an x in tabs? Rest a finger of the fretting hand on the string or a finger of my plucking hand near the bridge? Any input would be helpful

It's a muted note. I play them by releasing pressure in my fretting hand so I'm not actually sounding a note, it's more of a "thud".

Also, if you use more than one finger on the fretting hand (if possible) you will not get any harmonics, which may or may not suit the situation.
