Rickenbacker bass with a plectrum, over dubbed with a semi-acoustic electric guitar.
'The bass line for 'Roundabout' was doubled up with a hollow bodied Gibson six string. It's a mix of guitar and bass.' The exact Chris Squire quote from Bass Guitar Magazine issue 32!

Without a doubt, one of the best bass lines ever! Both part-wise and sound-wise!

IMO - but not really - it just is!

yep, for sure, it left its indelible mark on geddy's playing, sound and riffs for a while.

If you listen closely, you'll hear the bass come up in the mix on the last verse. That added touch of aggression is very subtle if you're not looking for it.
Agreed that it's one of the best bass lines ever. I've been messing around with it lately, just for fun. In some ways, it's easier than it sounds, and in others, it's not.

And, his overdriven tube amps added much to it as well. I think he was playing either a Marshall or Sunn in those days with one of the bass speakers replaced with a guitar speaker. His Ric had about 1/3 or 1/4 of the weight removed when his luthier shaved off the decals and such from the body. A lot of factors went into "that" sound.
I always thought the opening bass line to "Sound Chaser" was a killer also.

Some Yes trivia here: that opening motif of "Soundchaser" was written by drummer Alan White!
