What method do you use for tapping? I always see everyone doing different things while tapping. Most of the time I see people doing the hammer on-pull off technique which I think is very boring and limiting

Just wondering what everyone does when they tap. Did you invent your own way?

I use my finger to push the string against the fretboard. Then I let go and push in a different spot on the neck.

i'm still working on my tapping technique and trying out new things...but for the time being i tend to make chords or just a combination of notes over three or two strings, strum them with my thumb and then comedown on the fret i want to tap and i either slide down or up, or tap the fret adjacent on the next string up so on and so on. I also make the chord and just tap the notes i want to play over the chord. I dunno but i would check out some vidoes by victor wooten.. especially his rendition of "amazing grace" really good.

There's two methods for tapping (both guitar and bass):

Tapping like Billy Sheehan (Eddie Van Halens style), with speed and a lot of hammer on & pull off.
And 2 hands tapping (ex-Stu Hamm & a lot more ).

And i think both of them are great, each has it own "taste", what we need is just apply on the right time and depend on what we want.

I've used tapping to play riffs-where I'll hold a note with my left hand and use my right index to do some pedal point kinda stuff. I also do two hand tapping(also called pianistic tapping) so I can play stuff that has notes on opposite ends of the neck, or simply parts that cannot be played in the usual way. I'm not very good at two handed tapping, I mean I can do it and sound good but I can't do any of that crazy having both hands do completely different things or play really fast stuff.

try this:

G 5h7-(tap)10p7-(pull off 7 then hammer on 7 again)-12p7 repeat

I probably didn't explain that very well. It sounds cool though Sorry :P

I use both of these occaisionally when need arise. The 2 hand Stu "Country Music" style is great for the opening piano line in Mama Mia!

The other I'll occaisionally use is to fret a note and tap a harmonic higher up, perhaps an octave or 5th/7th. Has a really nice bell like ring to it. PLus it looks good
