*SOLD* Ca. 60-year-old Mittenwald Laminated Bass--Excellent

This is a lovely bass. It's been gigged often in jazz gigs (Obligato Strings, currently). I've had a new fingerboard, nut, and adjustable bridge built by David Graham in Dallas. It'll come with a David Gage Realist p'up and a very cushy Mooradian bag.

View the photos here. I'll post dimensions in the photo album.

Everything's in good order.

I'm in SW VA. I won't ship it, but I'll be happy to drive 2-3 hours for an extremely interested person.

Asking $1800.

Thanks.

That bass looks EXACTLY like my unidentified German ply. Just the neck looks different, mine is flamed.

These are really great basses when they're set up well. Mine sounds huge, I imagine yours does too.

EDIT:

Mine has the same screw and all! Except my endpin is totally dying - need to get it replaced. My bass has a school number scrawled on it as well, but on the right shoulder - 1017. From what I've been told, these basses were made in Western Germany circa 1946-60, were shipped to Pennsylvania as school basses, and then went out into the world. Although, by your tag, this info may be invalid for both of our basses. Unfortunately, my bass seemed to have 3 or 4 tags in it, and then had them scratched off. Mine just says 'Made in Western Germany' now.

Whoever buys this bass is buying a real treasure.

Herbie,

Thanks for the post! I do think it sounds great, although it doesn't have what I'd call a huge sound. I've always loved it's amplified sound, however. I'm a fairly small-framed fellow, so I don't know how much of the hugeness-of-sound factor is due to that. I also played a lot of jazz quartet stuff with it and wanted to get around quickly, so the action's been kept pretty low--thus contributing to a lack of "hugeness". I'm sure some of that could be rectified with a bridge adjustment....

Yep, it's very well-made and pretty, in a slightly-battered sort of way. I've really enjoyed it.

Sold! Look for it onstage with Del McCoury.
