1945 Kay S-51 model double bass in good condition. Serial number 12067. The bass is in very good for its age. There are no cracks in the neck and very little delamination around the edges.
According to Roger Stower's website (
www.kaybass.com), "The S-51 model Kay was advertised as the "Chubby Jackson Models" after the jazz bassist that endorsed them. They were also known as top of the line basses and were advertised over the years as, Swingmaster, Supreme, Slapmaster or Slap Pro basses. The S-51 scroll is fully carved completely from a single piece of wood which was common only in the early Kay instruments. The bass has true purfling, not painted on. The purfling is also present around the f holes. The body is laminate construction, the only method by which Kay made double basses.
This bass is strung with a low B string...what a great low growl!
Original ebony fingerboard, ebony tailpiece, and ebony horseshoe piece on the back of the heel of the neck, original chromed tuners (but one of the five tuning machine keys was replaced with a Kay polished brass key from the same era) it looks the same just not chromed )
$3,350. plus shipping
I would prefer this bass be picked up.
