1941 Kay M1 FS/FT

For sale - 1941 Kay M1. This bass has, as you could guess, 67 years worth of scratches, dings and mojo. The tailpiece is original. It appears to have had a nice, heavy duty, endpin installed at some point in its lifetime.

The heel had the all too typical "Kay/Engle heel break". It was a nice clean break and was an easy repair. I have not done any finish touch up on it. There is typical delamination in a few areas around the edges as can be seen in the photos. I used a syringe to get into the laminations with glue to shore things up, only using very good, fresh, hide glue. Veneer could be matched, cut and glued on for cosmetic purposes if someone so desired. Bumpers could also be added to prevent further stress on the plys when laying the bass down. I haven't done much to tweek the set-up to my preference because everyone's tastes are different.

I'm asking for $1200. Trades will be considered.

Thanks for looking!

It sounds like most I've heard. I've heard a few exceptional ones and I've heard some clunkers. This one sounds decent, but could sound better with a new bridge and strings. The guts are in good shape, but just not my thing. The tuners are smooth. The fingerboard is really nice, if you like a rosewood board.

Whatcha got? I need a decent cabinet to match up with an AI Clarus. PM me if you wanna chat.
