2004 Kolstein Nardelli

2004 Kolstein Nardelli Model Bass Violin
3/4 Size, Violin Cornered, Round Back Model
Made in the Kolstein Violin Shop, New York
U.S. $11,000 (approx. CAD $13,500) negotiable

This bass has a dark, warm, yet extremely clear tone. There is a dependable sub-bass resonance from the low end that can fill a hall and a soloistic voice in the high side that is clear, flexible, and projecting. It’s easy to play with a 41” string length and shoulders made for going into thumb position. An elongated fingerboard also helps in solo play allowing you to reach the “F” three leger lines above the treble. As for looks, it is attractively built on an Italian model with an antiqued dark brown oil varnish.

Success I’ve had with it: Runner-up 2004 Charleston Symphony Principal Bass audition, Winner 2005 Spokane Symphony Principal Bass audition, Winner 2006 Vancouver Symphony Associate Principal Bass international audition. I’ve also played both the Bottesini Concerto in B-minor and Paganini “Moses” Variations with orchestral accompaniment successfully as this bass was able to project through.

This Kolstein Nardelli would be perfect for anyone from student through professional looking for an upgrade. I chose it because it is competitive with others costing much more. The reason I am selling it is to get into a higher priced older instrument.

This bass can be seen in Vancouver, BC. I will consider driving to Seattle or Portland for serious inquiries.

Nice looking bass, but, unfortunately, too far out from my neck of the woods.

A question though . . . The specs and look of this bass seem very similar to Arnold Schnitzer's LaScala model. Did you ever have a chance to compare the Nardelli against one of Arnold & Wil's fully carved versions of the LaScala?

Thanks

I haven't yet seen the La Scala, but looking at the website it does have some real similarities, including the measurements. One difference I see is how wide the ribs of the Nardelli get towards the endpin. The La Scala seems to keep a steady width in the ribs to the bottom after the initial taper at the neck. The Nardelli starts at 6 3/4" at the neck and widens to 9" at the endpin, which I think is most likely wider than the La Scala endpin width. Also, the La Scala back and sides are made of maple as the Nardelli has willow back and sides. I have no idea how the sound compares as I've never heard a La Scala. If you're seriously interested I might be able to figure something out for a trial. I've never been to Chicago. It might be a fun vacation for my fiancee and me.

Barron,
As far as I know, being in the U.S. and alive makes your kidneys about as valuable as they get. However, I have two healthy ones. Sorry.

Updates!

A couple improvements have been made to this bass recently. I've had 4 leather bumpers added to the G-string side for protection when on the ground. I've also had the KC-Strings chromatic extension stops modified with a more effective shape and thicker leather pads. Absolutely no more slipping or rattling off once set in place!

All work has been professionally done by expert luthier Gerard Samija. Thanks, Gerard! Looks and works great!

Pictures to follow.
