Carved Juzek double bass for sale in Brooklyn, NY, as pictured below. This bass was recently purchased from Wynton Marsalis' bassist Carlos Henriquez, for $8500 (I have a signed receipt to prove the sale). Carlos used this bass on several recording dates, tours and TV shows with Wynton, so chances are you've heard and seen this Juzek already, on Letterman, or YouTube, or live on stage. Carlos claims this bass dates from the 1930’s.
Other than for a few nicks and well-done repairs, which are to be expected for an instrument this age, the bass is in great, solid condition overall. Typical punchy and loud vintage Juzek tone, excellent bowed and plucked. Carlos had the fingerboard meticulously set up by Jeff Bollbach. Comfortable 42” scale, and currently strung with an old set of Spirocore Weichs. I have only owned this instrument for the past couple of months, and as much as I love it, I don’t find myself playing it as often as it deserves to be played, so I have decided to let it go in the same exact condition I bought it for, and at a discounted price. For those who are interested, I have a 2 minute mp3 of me playing this Juzek that I could send via email.
I am looking for a local buyer, since I cannot arrange to ship the bass myself. However, you are welcome to get in touch with local bass shops like David Gage’s, and inquire how much they would charge for shipping the bass to where you live. I would be happy to bring the instrument to the shop and let them handle the shipping. Or maybe you could send me your empty bass trunk, and I could ship the trunk back to you with the Juzek in it.
I will welcome any questions you may have about the instrument, and/or forward them to Carlos Henriquez if I can't answer them myself, as long as your questions are in the form of a PM (private message) or email, thank you. If you’re in New York City, you’re welcome to check out the bass in person.
As I mentioned above, I purchased this bass for $8500. I will let it go for $7500 firm.
