Also posting this in the basses wanted, since i am loo**** to buy and sell ..
I have been pondering this move for awhile. I originally bought a 5 string bass from Bob Gollihur (one of his fully carved Bulgarian basses) in late 2000 with the intention of playing chamber music for weddings with the occasional jazz gig on the side. Since then, I have played maybe 2 weddings, and have pretty much played strictly jazz. I liked the extended reach of the low B on the 5 string, but have since re-strung it with a high C for jazz.
I found that for jazz, the 5 string just doesn't suite me. I play 6 string electric bass and thought that I would make the transition well, but I am just more comfortable playing a 4 string upright. In addition, I like to encourage other bassists to sit in - a lot just simply won't on a 5 string, I have had more than one bassist turn it down.
And of course, I would like to upgrade, and the wife and finances dictate that I can't have more than one upright (and I am selling other gear, upright and electric to finance a new 4 string as well).
So, if anyone is loo**** for a decent carved 5 string, let me know. Anyone familiar with Bob's basses knows that they are excellent quality for the price, and it's a good way to get into a carved 5 string for a relatively inexpensive amount. Here's the details -
5 string carved Bulgarian Upright
bought in 2000
good condition, a few bumps and dings
set up by Shanks strings in Pennsylvania
Currently strung EADGC with Obligatos
Extras:
Soft case (also from Bob)
BassMax pickup and preamp
set of D'Addario hybrid strings BEADG
I'll throw in a few books as well
In additition, if anyone has any leads (or has for sale) a decent jazz axe in the $4k-$6k range, i'd be interested in ta**** a look. Condition looks-wise is far less important than condition playing wise. Hey - it's for jazz :-)
I live in the Seattle area, but will ship if the buyer pays.
Thanks for loo**** ..
Jeff

¾ size bass
Eb neck
Upper bout 20.25
Lower bout 26.5
Round back
String length a hair past 41.5
never any repair work or modifications other than the initial setup and fingerboard plane, bridge replaced with a Panpi from Lemur on purchase as well
a few nicks but overall in excellent shape
fully carved, spruce top, maple sides, ebony fingerboard
I bought it in early 2001, I can probably dig up the original bill of sale if the buyer wants it.
It’s a sizeable bass, but very playable. Being a 5 string, the neck is a bit wide, but you get used to it fairly quickly. The upper register plays well, I don’t have any problems soloing in the thumb position. The action is even, and right now fairly low – set up for jazz and strung with a high C. Little bit of buzz on the E string.
Volume – I’d say medium loud to loud – louder than my friend’s Christopher, not quite as loud as my other friend’s pre-war German. I play small clubs with my Acoustic Image Contra on about “4” with the BassMax pickup, no preamp. Loud enough to keep up with an acoustic guitarist and quiet drummer, unamplified. Kept up with 2 violins and a cello player with no problem (arco). No problems shaking the pictures on the walls of my office when I practice arco.
The tone is definitely darker, meaty, and rich. There is some brightness to it, but it is definitely a darker tone with plenty of weight. Plays well with a bow, although I am not much of a bow player. Sounds rich, ambient, full. Responds very well. Nice player, but again the 5 string takes a bit of getting used to. Easy to play pizz, nice inviting fingerboard. It’s a nice bass overall.
Other than gigs, kept in an office with a humidified during winter, just in case. Been in Seattle since 2003,haven’t had to use the humidifier yet.

Also, I dug up the original bill of sale, and I was mistaken on the date. It was delivered to me in March of 2003. For some reason I thought it was an earlier date ...
Thanks!
Jeff
