Up for sale is a William Lewis & Sons full carved bass circa 1960.
I have owned this bass since 1995, and have taken excellent care of the instrument.
This is a 3/4 size fully carved bass with gamba corners. Two piece arched maple back, maple sides, and a two piece spruce top. It has a maple bridge that is in good shape. It does need a soundpost patch, but otherwise it is in solid structural condition.
The bass has a custom made fingered C-Extension made by luthier D.S. Henrie of Chicago. Included in the sale are a Reunion Blues gig bag, a Karl Herrman french bow made of Brazilwood, and a wheel for easy transport. Currently, the bass is strung with Pirastro Obligato strings.
Instrument measurements:
Upper Bout: 51.8 cm
Center Bout: 36.0 cm
Lower Bout: 65.4 cm
Body Length (top): 110.5 cm
Body Length (back): 109.0 cm
String Length: 41 1/2 inches
Rib Depth: 19.2 cm
Asking $7000
Asking price is based on a recent appraisal done in July 2010 for $7000.
I live in Oak Park which is just outside of Chicago, and will gladly schedule times to tryout the bass. This bass has a very nice full sound, and depending on the string you use, get a wide variety of timbres.
