| G.A. Pfretzschner ALUMINUM 3/4 Upright Bass for Sale, PRICE DROP! Just put this up on Minneapolis Craigslist, but wanted to post it here as well. I'd prefer not to have to disassemble and ship this bass, so I'm looking for buyers in the greater Twin Cities region. But I'll also be travelling through Wisconsin and Chicago in the next two months, so drop-offs in those areas could be arranged too. Thanks for looking!
Bought this bass at a Minneapolis Schools instrument surplus sale several years ago, but I don’t play it nearly enough and it’s time to part with it.
The Good: Very rare German-made 3/4 Aluminum Upright Bass manufactured by G.A. Pfretzschner in the 1930’s or 40’s. The body is entirely aluminum with a faux wood finish and the neck and head are wood. This is a flat-back model, as opposed to the more common rounded backs. The body is held together by screws.
The Bad (& The Ugly): Cosmetically, this thing is by no means in perfect condition. The faux wood finish is worn off around the screws, there are various scuffs and scrapes on the rest of the body finish, and nicks and gouges in the wood on the head. The stain on the fingerboard shows some wear, and to top it off there is a big “Minneapolis Schools” sticker on the back. The bridge doesn’t appear to be original and the action is fairly high.
That being said, aluminum uprights are extremely rare and this one is definitely in great condition for its age and provenance. It’s playable as-is though it could use a professional set-up. A lot of people with aluminums will strip off the faux wood finish and buff up the aluminum, so the finish wear is a minor drawback. Asking $1800. $1500 or best offer. PM me for more pics and info.
