string choices

Hey Pirot,
Nice to hear from you - hope Lisa and Lucian are well. About the string choices - you are right. Everytime I get a new bass the whole darn proccess seems to start over with strings and gear. Anyhow, to answer your questions I keep comming back to the same basic set up - Thomastik weichs for the E, A and D strings. Then depending the weather and how the bass is doing - an Olive, Eudoxa or anima G - rarely I will throw on an Orchestra G. I prefer the weichs for their tension - but I really only care for them once they have been on the bass for about 2-3 months, nice and broken in. The attain a dead quality I really like.
I have flirted with Animas for a while and I also really like the Labella and Lenzner plain guts on the G and D but I learned my lesson kinda hard core about that. This year I started working as a house bassist for two commercial studios here in NYC and once I was asked to do some bowing and I had the guts on my bass I had a hard time blending in with the other strings and playing in tune as well. So, while I love guts and feel most expressive when using them, they got me in some hot water when doing some sessions so until I have a another bass to use I will stick with the Weichs and the Olive or Eudoxa G strings.
I found that I lost some of the string nuance with the Animas and they don't bow that well IMO. I found spiccato almost impossible but that could just be my bowing technique - however as stated above those strings don't blend well in a section environment either.
When I toured with the rock band I really enjoyed using the Black tape Labellas on my Kay - but that was cuz I was playing with a lot of wattage and driving a rock band. The presence of those strings was amazing and they were thick and punchy. Those strings wont grab a bow either though.
Where are you at these days with string choice?? How is your bass doing? I did try the daddario hybrid mediums but didn't like the way they felt under my hands... a totally subjective thing.
I would love to hear what your thoughts on this subject
take care!

Andy

p.s - I am coming to Cali for Thanksgiving and plan to drive my girlfriend up north to show it to her - hopefully we can catch up and hang out!
