How accurate is the tone?

Although I am quite happy with my LD175, I have been wondering how accurate to the real thing the channels are. I'm in no way trying to bash Line 6's work, or to ridicule it. The thing is, the R&B channel is my favorite; it is quite growly. It's designed to emulate an Ampeg Portaflex, and I am planning to get a big rig soon, and I was thinking that if the channels really aproximated to the real thing, then it could really help me find the correct amplifier. I am not expecting these emulations to sound exactly, nor react, like the real thing, but at least I hope it is very close.

No, I haven't ever played an SVT, nor a Portaflex, nor a Super Bass '71.. etc. I just want to know in what direction I should move.

Edit: I'm not upgrading because the Line 6 is poor or mediocre in any way, I just want to get my signature tone. I like my Line 6 very much.

if you really like one or more of the tones in your LD combo, and are looking to upgrade, line6 makes a 400w and 750w head-only version of the LD combos.

i'm jus' sayin'.

Having owned and played through a basspod xt and having owned about some of the amp line6 emulates... gk800rb, ampeg portaflex, mesaboogie, I can say that a very large part of what you actually hear is dependent on what you run the basspodxt through. I ran mine in front of my first rig, a behringer halfstack. It sounded mediocer at best... but it sounded much more accurate through good quality headphones. As for the lowdown combos, I played through a small 8 or 10 inch speaker one and the tone again was OK. Some models were way off though. The mesa was way off in my opinion. The bassman was about the best one out there. The fliptop was ok. The line6 pod let me get a good idea of what amps I wanted to get in the long run. Its also a great tool to learn how to setup your sound, effects wise and amp and cab wise.

If you like the tones of the one modeled after the Ampeg- I'd start by checking out an Ampeg rig. There are lots of cabs, heads, and combos to consider - so go with whatever fits your budget and sounds good to your ears. I've played through all sorts of modelers and such, and with all of them - the models I like the best end up being ones based on either an SVT or a B15. Since my gigging amps are all Ampegs anyway - I never use any pedals, modelers, etc... live since it would be a little redundent to run a B-15 model into a B-15 amp.
